Project Study Area

The study area for the JLUS includes the Counties of Harford, Cecil, and Kent; the Cities of Aberdeen and Havre de Grace; and Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG).

Aberdeen Proving Ground is a United States (US) Department of the Army (Army) installation located in northeast Maryland midway between Baltimore and Philadelphia. APG encompasses approximately 72,000 acres of land, wetland and water area, and is situated on Maryland's western bank of the Chesapeake Bay, just south of the Susquehanna River inlet. Research, development, testing and evaluation (RDT&E) ranges comprise approximately 66,000 acres of APG's installation area.

The installation is home to nine major Army commands and supports more than 80 supported organizations, 20 satellites and 17 private organizations. APG's primary mission is in three areas: RDT&E; C4ISR (command, control, communications and computers for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance); and chemical, biological and nuclear defense. The installation provides facilities to perform RDT&E of Army materiel and include laboratories for research investigations, state-of-the-art ranges, engineering test courses for tanks and other tracked vehicles and a broad array of research investigations. APG is recognized as one of the world's most significant research and development, testing, and training facilities for military weapons, equipment and personnel.
